چکیده

One aspect of brainstorming that has received little research attention is how the brainstorming task should be presented to the group, whether as one allencompassing question or as a series of separate questions each focusing on one aspect of the task. This paper reports the results of an experiment in which groups electronically brainstormed on intact tasks (where all parts of the task were presented simultaneously) or on decomposed tasks (where three subcategories of the task were presented to the groups). We also examined the effects of decomposing the time periods in which groups worked, either one time period or several shorter ones. Groups in the decomposed task condition generated 40% more ideas, but there were no time effects. We attribute these differences to the ability of task decomposition to refocus members’ attention more evenly across the entire task solution space.

Structuring Time and Brainstorming 1 Task in Electronic

There are many ways in which a GSS can be used to support group brainstorming. This paper reports the results of an experiment hat manipulated task structure and time structure. Groups electronically brainstormed on intact tasks (where all parts of the task were presented simultaneously) or on partitioned tasks (where three subcategories of the task were presented to the groups). The time perio...

Equality of Reticence in Groups and Idea Generation: an Empirical Study

Contingency models proposed for group support systems suggest that task, technology, group and individual characteristics may explain observed effects. Task, technology and group characteristics have been studied to some extent. Characteristics of individual participants have received less attention. In this article, the results of an experimental study on the equality of reticence in groups on...

Task Structuring a Brainstorming Group Activity with an AHP-Based Group Support System

The use of Group Support Systems has been researched repeatedly using many task-type. For brainstorming tasks the process support of the system have been restricted to ensuring member anonymity and allowing the simultaneous entry of ideas. Little work has been done investigating other process improvements for idea-generating groups. In this paper, we investigate the effect on idea quality and q...

A Theoretical Framework of Input Complexity, Mental Workload, and Group Performance in Electronic Brainstorming

Idea generation software can be useful in electronic brainstorming and creativity tasks. These tools facilitate the generation of a large number of ideas which may result in information overload. Number of ideas, idea diversity, and flow of ideas in an electronic brainstorming session constitute input complexity which results in mental workload and eventually affects group performance. In this ...
